What is coriander?

Coriander(Coriandrum sativum) is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae. Coriander is native  Southern Europe and Northern Africa to Southwestern Asia. The seed of the cilantro plant is called coriander. It is a culinary and medicinal herb. Coriander is used; all parts of the plant are edible, but the fresh leaves and the dried seeds are the parts most traditionally used in cooking.

It is also known as Chinese parsley, dhania or cilantro. Coriander is a commonly known kitchen herb and one of the oldest spices.It is also an ingredient of spice mixtures like curry powder. The leaves or the entire young plants are popular as a culinary herb and vegetable.Coriander has been used in folk medicine since antiquity. 

Coriander leaves are applied in East Asia as a cure for measles. Coriander seeds have carminative, diuretic, tonic, stomachic, antibilious, refrigerant, anticatarrhal, antispasmodic, galactagogue, emmenagogue and aphrodisiac effects.

Coriander leaves and dried seeds are commonly used in cooking in India. It has been used to treat disorders of the digestive, respiratory, and urinary systems. Coriander has antioxidant, anti-diabetic, antimutagenic, anthelmintic, cholesterol-lowering, anti-fungal, anticancer and  anxiolytic. Coriander is traditionally used for digestive and gastric complaints, coughs, chest pains, bladder complaints, fever, dysentery, headaches, oral and many other complaints. 

The coriander have high contents of vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin K, iron, manganese, thiamine, zinc, and dietary fiber. Coriander leaves to contain linalool, α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, γ-terpinene, ρ-lymene, borneol, citronellol, geraniol, pyrazine, pyridine, thiazole.

Homemade coriander seed tea for thyroid


2 teaspoon of coriander seed

1/2 teaspoon of crushed ginger

500ml of water

1 teaspoon of sugar or honey (optional)


Add coriander seed to a pan and dry roast until nice aroma and colour changes slightly.

Now add it to the mixie or blender and grind it coarsely.

Heat two cups of water in a pan ,when it comes to boil add the crushed coriander seed, grated ginger let it boil for 10 minutes until the amount of water reduced a half. Strain it well.

Switch off the stove.

Strain it into a cup and add sugar or honey, stir well.

Enjoy your coriander tea for daily two to three times.

You might get good result.
