Ajwain is a herbaceous herb belonging to the family Apiaceae and vastly grows in Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India as well as European regions. Trachyspermum ammi commonly known as ‘Ajwain’ or ‘Carom seeds’. It is a highly valued medicinally important seed spice. It has a bitter, pungent taste.

Ajwain is commonly used in baked goods, breads, vegetables, beans and more. In the Middle East, the spice is used in both meat and rice dishes.

It has been proven to possess various pharmacological activities like antifungal, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antinociceptive, cytotoxic, hypolipidemic, antihypertensive, antispasmodic, broncho-dilating actions, anti lithiasis, diuretic, abortifacient, antitussive, nematicidal, anthelmintic and antifilarial.

Ajwain seeds consist of moisture, protein, fat, minerals, fiber, carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorus, iron, carotene, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin.  

Ajwain is also useful in toothache, earache and rheumatism, as we can use the oil as ear drops and use the oil as a massage for neuralgia.It helps in curing the disorders such as ulcers, ringworm, itching, stomach worm, bile, menstrual and post-natal disorders, leucorrhoea, female infertility, pimples, kidney stones and many more, and also useful as an aphrodisiac.

It has been provided as a skin cream or oral capsule to treat psoriasis, regimentation from vitiligo, or skin disorders of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. It is used traditionally as an important remedial agent for flatulence, atonic dyspepsia, diarrhoea, abdominal tumors, abdominal pains, piles, and bronchial problems, lack of appetite, galactagogue and amenorrhoea.

Ajwain can increase the secretion of gastric acid, bile acids and activity of digestive enzymes. It may also reduce the food transient time. In Indian system of medicine, ajwain is administered for curing stomach disorders, a paste of crushed fruits is applied externally for relieving colic pains; and a hot and dry fomentation of the fruits is applied on the chest for asthma.
