Cherry belongs to the genus Prunus of the Rosaceae, or rose family. The genus Prunus includes other stone fruits such as almond, apricot, plum, peach, and nectarine. Cherries are grown in many parts of the world on commercial scale, but they have never gained the popularity in Afghanistan as in Europe and the Middle East
Cherries are an excellent source of vitamins, especially vitamin C , vitamin E , vitamin K.
Most sweet cherries are consumed as fresh fruit. The tart cherry (Prunus cerasus), is sometime called “red cherry” or “sour cherry” may have arisen from an unreduced pollen grain of Prunus avium crossed with Prunus fruticosa.
Sour cherry juice has several phenolic compounds, anthocyanins in particular, having biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, and antiobesity properties, have recently been investigated in different experimental models.
The fruit and stem of the sour cherry are also used to produce medicine and food. Sour cherry is used for osteoarthritis, muscle pain, gout, to increase urine production, and to help digestion . It can contain ingredients that reduce inflammation, protect from oxidative stress in neuronal cells and enhance muscle recovery.
Cherry products may have therapeutic potential as sleep aids. Cherries contain a significant amount of puerilely alcohol (POH), a chemical that may play an active role in slowing or stopping progression of certain types of cancer. Tart cherries may be useful in treating diabetes, particularly the anthocyanin, which are effective at increasing insulin production by pancreatic cells when exposed to sugar.
